Adjustment-related concern

Homesickness & adjustment

Leaving home for the first time is a bigger transition than people give it credit for. Get support from therapists who understand what it's like to build a whole new life from scratch.

Most students with insurance pay a $20 average copay. No insurance? Sessions start at $80.

What is homesickness & adjustment?

Homesickness is the distress of being away from familiar people, places, and routines. Adjustment difficulty is the broader challenge of adapting to a new environment — a new city, new relationships, and a level of independence you may not have had before. Both are common in the first year of college, and both are treatable.

How it affects college students

Homesickness doesn't always look like missing home outright — it can show up as low motivation, trouble making friends, difficulty concentrating, or just a persistent feeling that nothing feels quite right yet. It's especially common for students who moved far from home, are first-generation college students, or are balancing family expectations with a new environment.

Our treatment approach

Our therapists help you build a sense of stability and belonging in your new environment, work through the specific losses that come with leaving home, and develop coping strategies for the parts that still feel hard. This is talk-therapy-led care, and it often overlaps with support for identity, family dynamics, and social anxiety.
